This handsome antique silver niello snuff box is a sophisticated example of traditional metalworking artistry, combining practical function with striking decorative appeal. The rectangular form is enhanced by finely executed parallel bands of contrasting dark niello inlay set against polished silver. The bold geometric pattern creates a refined Art Deco-like visual effect while retaining the craftsmanship associated with earlier European and Middle Eastern silver traditions. The rounded corners and substantial construction give the box a pleasing weight in the hand, while the clean lines allow the intricate surface decoration to take center stage.
Measuring approximately 3.75 inches long, 2.5 inches deep, and 1 inch high, and weighing 97 grams, this attractive silver niello box is a fine example of traditional silversmithing and decorative metalwork, offering timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship. Crafted in solid 900 silver and weighing a substantial 97 grams, the piece features an elegant linear design created through the centuries-old technique of niello work, giving the box its distinctive black-and-silver appearance. Good antique condition with a few small indents. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Niello is a decorative technique dating back to antiquity. The process begins by engraving or etching channels into the silver surface. These recesses are then filled with a black metallic compound traditionally composed of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur. The piece is heated so the niello fuses into the engraved areas, after which the surface is polished smooth. The result is a durable and dramatic contrast between the bright silver and the rich black decoration, creating patterns that remain crisp and visually striking for generations.
The clean, modernist appearance suggests a Central European workshop producing luxury smoking accessories during the late Victorian or early Art Deco periods.
Originally intended as a snuff box, it could also have been used for cigarettes, visiting cards, small keepsakes, or other personal effects. Today it serves equally well as a distinguished desk accessory, collector's piece, or decorative object for a study, library, or gentleman's smoking room.
