A captivating example of 19th-century decorative arts, this charming lacquer box beautifully combines functionality with storytelling. The lid is adorned with a richly hand-painted scene depicting the celebrated Boyar Wedding Feast, one of the most beloved themes in Russian art. Inspired by the lavish banquets and pageantry of old Russia, the composition portrays elegantly dressed noblemen and guests gathered around a festive table, illuminated by the warm glow of an interior setting. The scene is rendered in deep jewel tones of crimson, amber, and gold, creating a wonderfully atmospheric image that draws the viewer into a world of medieval Russian splendor.
Measures 6.5 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 2.25 inches high. Includes the original working key. The box itself is finished in traditional black lacquer, providing a dramatic contrast to the vibrant artwork above. Time and handling have imparted a beautiful aged character to the surface, enhancing its antique appeal while preserving the rich decorative presentation. Adding to its charm, the original working key remains with the box, a feature often lost over the course of more than a century. Good antique condition with light signs of age-related wear. Please note that photos are taking under bright lighting conditions. The lid painting appears darker under lower light. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Whether displayed on a desk, bookshelf, or dressing table, this piece serves equally well as a decorative accent, keepsake box, or collector's object. Its combination of historical imagery, hand-painted craftsmanship, and original hardware makes it an especially appealing example of antique Russian-inspired lacquer work.
A delightful and highly decorative 19th-century lacquer box, rich in character, history, and old-world charm.
