A refined expression of nineteenth-century French bronze artistry, this elegant patinated bronze bust depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and grace. Richly detailed and exceptionally cast, the sculpture captures the timeless ideal of classical femininity that inspired generations of artists during the Neoclassical revival. Venus is portrayed with a serene, contemplative expression, her delicately modeled features framed by intricately arranged hair adorned with a jeweled diadem. Graceful drapery cascades across her shoulders and bodice, creating a beautiful interplay of light and shadow that highlights the sculptor's remarkable attention to detail.
Measures 11.5 inches high, 5.25 inches wide, and 3.5 inches deep. Total weight is approximately 5 pounds. The warm patinated bronze displays subtle variations in tone, accentuating the refined modeling of the face, hair, and flowing garments. Mounted on an attractive red marble plinth supported by gilt bronze feet, the presentation is both sophisticated and visually striking. The contrast between the rich bronze surface and vibrant marble base creates a luxurious decorative object equally suited for display on a mantel, library shelf, desk, or cabinet. Good antique condition with untouched dark surface to bronze. A few small chips to marble base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The bust is signed "J. Salmson" on the shoulder and is the work of Jean Jules Salmson (1823–1902), a distinguished French sculptor known for his finely executed portrait busts, allegorical figures, and classical subjects. Salmson studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited regularly at the prestigious Paris Salon, where his works earned critical acclaim for their technical excellence and elegant interpretation of classical themes. Today, his sculptures are sought after by collectors of nineteenth-century French decorative arts and academic sculpture.
A wonderful example of late nineteenth-century Neoclassical design, this handsome bronze embodies the enduring fascination with the art and mythology of the ancient world while serving as an elegant statement piece for traditional, European, and Neoclassical interiors.
