The Maralunga is one of the most celebrated works of 20th-century furniture design, legendary for its exceptional comfort and timeless form.

In the 1960s, Magistretti began his 30-year collaboration with the renowned entrepreneur Cesare Cassina, head of the furniture manufacturer Cassina. In their design approach, the two men shared a common vision of the relationship between modernity and tradition, and they were closely connected (Magistretti designed Cassina's luxury villa in 1965). Their friendship, however, was not without its disagreements.

The Genesis of Maralunga:

Legend has it that Cassina hated the prototype of Magistretti's Maralunga sofa so much when he saw it that he struck it, breaking the backrest and causing the sofa to collapse. "Well, great, it looks perfect to me," an unflappable Magistretti is said to have replied, and thus the forward-leaning, height-adjustable Maralunga was born. The Maralunga sofa, incidentally, went on to win the Italian Compasso d'Oro award.
