The Kon-Mukuge is mounted from a hand-painted Japanese ceremonial silk obi in Kon-iro (紺色) — royal indigo, the colour that has defined the apex of Japanese textile culture for centuries. Kon-iro is not simply a shade of blue. It is the colour of the deep ocean before storm, of formal ceremony, of the most controlled and considered Japanese aesthetic: the colour that says everything has been decided with precision and nothing has been left to chance. Against this ground, the obi carries Tegaki (手描き) freehand brush-painted Mukuge (槿) — the white hibiscus — rendered in pearl white silk dye with silver foliage and the faintest breath of coral in the open stamen. Mukuge is the flower of patient continuous bloom, opening every morning of the summer and dropping by evening, and is one of the most revered flowers for the tokonoma alcove precisely because it does not hold on. The painting captures the flower at the moment of fullest opening: petals relaxed, stamen extended, foliage unfurling in silver around it against the absolute blue void.

At the atelier we cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The piece is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom, finished with a leather hanging cord, and supplied ready to hang. The bars are part of the work, not a separate purchase. Nothing about the painted surface has been altered.

The Kon-Mukuge functions as a graphic anchor with exceptional cultural depth. The Kon-iro indigo works equally well against navy, chalk white, natural linen, pale oak, and aged brass — and sits in easy conversation with every blue-and-white interior tradition in Europe. It belongs in a sunlit entryway, a white-walled living room, the lobby of a hotel that values understatement, a well-considered bathroom. The buyer who chooses the Kon-Mukuge has a sure eye and does not need to explain the choice.

Each tapestry arrives with its own passport from the atelier — a handmade record of the obi's first life, the composition that was cut from it, the lining and mounting it received, signed and dated in Amsterdam.

Construction:
Cut and redesigned from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi, lined to support the silk threads, mounted on handmade hardwood bars and finished with a leather hanging cord. Bars and cord supplied. No metal touches the visible silk.
