Late 19th century black-and-white nautical maritime etching by Otis S. Weber. Coastal seascape with a clipper sailing ship caught in a storm. Signed in plate O.S. Weber, lower left. Pencil signed, lower left. Copyright 1887. Remark of seagull and lighthouse. Quartersawn oak frame.
A marine painter, often working in watercolor, Otis Weber was from New England, but little information has been found about his life, although his works frequently go through auction. His paintings date as early as 1876, and he appears to have worked into the 20th century. The following information, submitted by Edward P. Bentley, is from Census Records and City Directories. Parents - 1st Wife Mary died Oct., 1850. 1852 Marriage of Winslow and Experience. Oct. 21, 1852. 1860 Census Monroe, Maine, Father: Winslow farmer. His wife listed as Experience. Same age – 50. 1870 Census Orrington, Maine, Father: farmer. Mother: Experience. He age 23 listed as “Mariner”. 1877 Boston City Directory: artist. 1880 Census Boston, MA Picture painter age 37. 1880 Exhibited at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. 1882 Boston City Directory: Artist. Marriage license, April 20, 1885. He was from Boston. Age given as 37. Parents -Winslow and Mary Sarah E. Rose from Cambridgeport, age 25. 1886 Boston City Directory: Marine artist. 1888 New York City Directory. 1891 New York City Directory - Listed as artist, 4 W. 14th. 1892 New York City Directory. 1893 Jersey City, New Jersey City Directory: Listed as Artist. 1900 Census, Monroe, Maine.
