The interior retains its original fifteen-bottle divider, while the weathered surfaces and remnants of stamped metal identification lend the piece the honest character of a working cellar object.

Marked “J. Damoy Succursale,” the crate is associated with the historic Julien Damoy wine and provisions business. Damoy established his celebrated Paris grocery enterprise in 1889 and later operated branches, warehouses, and wine interests throughout France. The family also acquired the Gevrey-Chambertin property that became Domaine Pierre Damoy in the early 20th century, an estate in Burgundy, France that is still operational today.

Fill it with wine or champagne bottles in a kitchen, dining room, or cellar, or use it as an unusually handsome storage basket for linens and firewood. Its strong rectangular framework also allows for creative wall-mounted display in a wine room or butler’s pantry.
