This example represents the final phase of pre-hydraulic chair design, created just prior to the widespread adoption of hydraulic barber chairs introduced in the early 1900s.

Constructed of heavy cast iron with a sculptural four-leg base and central drum, the chair features a fully articulated mechanical system operated by multiple hand levers. The backrest reclines, the seat tilts, and arms lower allowing the chair to achieve a near-horizontal position—an indication of its dual use in both barbering and early medical or dental environments. Retaining its original black japanned finish with traces of hand-applied stencil decoration, the chair exhibits a rich and desirable patina consistent with age and use. The visible mechanical linkages and spring-driven adjustments highlight the ingenuity of early industrial design, offering both functional and visual appeal.

The wooden seat frame supports later upholstery, adding warmth and contrast to the otherwise industrial aesthetic while remaining in keeping with its utilitarian origins.

Stamped “BIG…” on the base with remnants of “St. Louis,” this piece is attributed to the Bigelow Chair Company, a lesser-known but historically significant manufacturer operating in St. Louis during the same period as larger firms such as Koken. Surviving examples are notably rare.
