This jar originates from the famous Shiwan kilns in Guangdong, China. It dates from the late 19th century to early 20th century (late Qing Dynasty into the early Republic period). The measurements (11 inches in diameter, 12 inches in height) are the exact measurements of the classic antique storage pots.
The distinct thick, mottled, emerald-to-moss green glaze over a coarse earthenware or stoneware body is classic Shiwan ware (from the kilns in Foshan, Guangdong province). The wide, unglazed, stepped inset rim is specifically designed to support a matching flat earthenware lid or to be tightly wrapped with fabric/paper and tied off with twine for food preservation.
This pot was strictly utilitarian, used for storing goods like salt, rice, wine, or pickled oil. Because they were mass-produced for the domestic market and export, individual potters rarely signed or marked them
