Andy warhol's flowers made their first appearance on the artistic scene of new york in 1964 when they were exposed to leo castelli gallery. Rediscovering a huge success.
flowers in pop art version are among the most evocative and most appreciated works from the artist's public, but also the last in which the artist uses the painting technique.
for warhol working on natural images it was something ever experienced before, in fact it seems that the idea of this choice was suggested by my friend henry geldzahler, then curator of the metropolitan museum of art. In fact, he played at warhol's studio , he noted how much the factory was full of works depicting marilyn and works of commercial products, such as campbell soups and coca cola. He therefore decided to advise the eccentric pop artist to use something different.
inspired by hibiscus flowers, in flowers andy warhol transforms the nature in the protagonist for the first time, using an unusual style. The pop artist combines impressionist and abstract techniques giving life to unpublished images, very different from the previous ones inspired by celebrities and consumerism.
this lithograph is numbered 1534/2400. The cmoa stamp is a guarantee for multiples of a. Warhol. Cmoa is the acronym of carnegie museum of art, museum of pittsburgh, a birthplace of a. Warhol, to which the artist donated 60 of his subjects, granting the possibility of creating multiple (of each subject 60 x 60 such as mao tse tung , flowers and marilyn monroe) in limited edition of 2400 pcs. For this reason the availability of these lithographs begins to be difficult, in fact these numbered subjects are requested all over the world.
the collection consists of 5 pieces, with identical numbering, 1534/2400.
the frame is in black lacquered wood of about 2.5 cm with round section.
curiosity: to make flowers, warhol used a cover photo taken to hibiscus flowers, taken from modern photograpgy magazine. Of course this photo served solely as a starting point, in fact to make flowers, warhol brought to the image a large amount of graphic changes that would unrecognizable the original flowers. The cover shot had been done by patricia caulfield, who claimed the right on the photo and asked for a compensation to warhol, who was forced by the court, to sell two of his works, in addition to a percentage on future revenues.
