On the underside of the base, the character "京" … Read more This is a one-of-a-kind vase by a contemporary Japanese ceramic artist. On the underside of the base, the character "京" (Kyo/Kyoto) is inscribed, which we initially took to be a personal maker's mark. We searched for artists whose names include this character, but were unable to find any information connecting it to this particular piece. As a result, we cannot say with certainty which regional kiln it comes from, or the exact techniques and period involved in its making.

It is likely the work of an artist who is not particularly well known. Even without such background information, however, we believe that anyone who looks closely at the form itself and the way the glaze has been applied will immediately recognize this as a genuinely fascinating piece.

The vase has a freely twisted, three-dimensional form reminiscent of a sculpture, with a rim that rises unevenly in soft, undulating waves. The body is covered in a gradation that shifts from beige to brown to gray, and while the coloring appears spontaneous at first glance, it maintains a balance that seems carefully considered so that the piece looks beautiful from any angle. The rim in particular has been left deliberately rough and roughly cut away, giving the whole piece a strong accent point. Its form resists easy categorization as a simple jar or vase, and instead calls to mind something more like a burlap sack. Despite being hard-fired ceramic, its plump, rounded silhouette gives an impression of softness that goes beyond what the material itself would suggest.

Another appealing feature of this piece is that it can be displayed either upright, in the conventional way, or turned on its side. As shown in the accompanying display photographs, there are two distinct ways to present it, each offering a completely different impression depending on the viewing angle. It feels as though the piece was thoughtfully considered from both the user's and the viewer's perspective, designed to look beautiful from every angle.

In terms of color, the vase is finished in calm, muted tones throughout, allowing it to blend naturally into almost any interior, whether Japanese or Western, modern or antique in style. It works well in an entryway, a corner of the living room, or on a shelf, offering presence without ever overwhelming the space.

We have also confirmed its practicality: after filling the vessel about one-third full with water and leaving it for a day, we found no leakage whatsoever. It can be used to hold fresh or dried flowers, or simply displayed as it is, where it holds its own as a striking object.
