A 1953 oil on board painting of a street scene by the American artist Ellen Lanyon (1926-2013). This painting depicts a a brown road with trees to one side and rows of colorful buildings on the other. There is a fountain in the foreground, and people walking by in the distaince. Held in a wooden frame, this piece is signed and dated to the lower left.
Born in Chicago in 1926, Ellen Lanyon began her artist career at the age of 17, drawing machine parts at the foundry that her father worked at. She completed a work-study program in 1944 at the Ox-Bow School of Art and then her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She drew inspiration for her street scenes from her rides on the L Train through Chicago. She moved to New York City in the 1970s, and over the course of her career, had over seventy solo exhibitions. Her work is shown in galleries across the country, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and the National Museum of American Art.
