Antique Black Forest Antler Key Rack, Germany ca. 1930s
Item e8155
This striking antique key rack is framed with an arrangement of natural deer antlers, forming a sculptural surround of organic texture and rustic elegance. The tines are artfully composed to create a bold, symmetrical frame. The composition is centered by a finely hand-carved medallion at the crown, depicting a stag in a woodland setting, while the base is accented by a decorative rosette carved from an antler burr. Six metal hooks are built into the wooden back panel.
At the beginning of the 19th century the European nobility discovered antler furnishings for their hunting castles and countryseats. The furniture was either manufactured completely from e.g. stag antler, or it was decorated with antler pieces from the stag, deer, fallow deer and others to get a hunting desing. A famous example was the interior design of 'Jagdschloss Platte' (hunting castle Platte) of count William of Nassau near Wiesbaden, Germany in 1825.
