A beautiful 19th-century Tibetan thangka depicting Vaishravana (Kubera), the revered Buddhist guardian of the North and deity of wealth, prosperity, and protection. Finely hand-painted in mineral pigments on cotton, the composition portrays Vaishravana enthroned upon his magnificent white snow lion, an enduring symbol of fearless power and enlightened authority.
Richly detailed with traditional Himalayan iconography, the deity is shown before an elaborate palace set within a celestial landscape filled with swirling clouds, offering figures, and auspicious motifs. The harmonious palette of emerald greens, deep blues, warm ochres, and vermilion reflects the refined artistry of Tibetan painters during the 19th century.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Vaishravana is one of the Four Heavenly Kings, serving as the protector of the northern direction and a guardian of the Buddhist teachings. Beyond his role as a protector, he is also venerated as the bestower of abundance and good fortune, making depictions of this deity especially meaningful to collectors of Himalayan Buddhist art.
Presented in a custom gilt frame, this thangka is equally suited for display as a work of fine art or as an important devotional object.
