Complete desk sets from this period are becoming exceptionally difficult to find, especially examples retaining their original cut-glass inkwells and all of the accompanying silver-plated fittings.

The rectangular stand is raised on elegant cast paw feet and features a richly molded gadrooned border. Across the front is the original pen tray, designed to keep quill pens neatly organized while writing. Three removable containers sit behind the pen rest: two fitted with their original cut-glass inkwells and silver-plated lids, and a larger central covered compartment traditionally used for pounce, blotting sand, wafers, or sealing accessories. All three removable inserts remain with the stand, making this an unusually complete survivor.

Old Sheffield Plate represents one of the earliest and most important silver-making techniques. Developed in England during the mid-18th century by Thomas Boulsover, sheets of sterling silver were permanently fused to a copper core before being rolled and hand-formed into finished objects. This labor-intensive process predates electroplating by decades and produces a warm, distinctive character that collectors immediately recognize.

This example displays many of the hallmarks collectors seek, including hand-finished construction, wrapped edges, visible hand assembly, and the soft copper tones that have naturally emerged through generations of careful use. These signs of age add authenticity and reflect more than two centuries of history.

The stand presents beautifully and would make an exceptional addition to a writing desk, library, law office, or English country house interior. It is equally striking as a decorative object, offering the timeless appeal that only early Sheffield Plate can provide.

Condition is very good for its age, with expected wear to the silver plate, scattered copper bleed-through, light surface scratches, and age-related patina consistent with an authentic Old Sheffield Plate piece. The original glass inserts remain intact and display beautifully.
