Pieces of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly with both the dome and tray remaining together in such beautiful condition.

The pierced repoussé decoration is simply outstanding. Rich scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers, and rococo flourishes have all been hand-worked using the traditional repoussé technique, in which the design is hammered from the reverse to create remarkable depth and sculptural detail. The openwork creates a delicate lace-like appearance that contrasts beautifully with the highly polished silver plate.

The graceful domed cover features a substantial arched handle and an unengraved cartouche, allowing the next owner to personalize the piece if desired. The original tray echoes the floral border of the dome and rests on four charming bun feet, giving the entire presentation wonderful height and elegance.

Originally intended for serving fine cheeses during formal Victorian entertaining, today this piece makes an equally impressive decorative statement on a dining table, sideboard, butler’s pantry, or kitchen island. It also displays beautifully during the holidays filled with seasonal greenery or used as an elegant serving piece for entertaining.
