René Lalique glassmaker magnifique created this spectacular example of early 20th-century French luxury art glass
Designed by master glassmaker René Lalique at the height of the Art Deco movement. The “Ormeaux” (Elm Leaves) vase is celebrated for its striking globular form, defined by a near-perfect roundness that rests elegantly upon a cleanly flattened base. Its narrow, sculptural neck sweeps upward into a beautifully flared, light-catching rim that perfectly frames the piece. Possessing a substantial, quality heft in the hand, the vase is entirely enveloped in deeply raised, overlapping elm leaves. This deeply molded texture creates a tactile, highly organic yet sophisticated feel that captures the essence of Lalique's naturalistic genius.
OPTICAL PROFILE & LUMINESCENCE
This specimen exhibits the absolute pinnacle of historical pre-war opalescent glass chemistry, utilizing Tyndall scattering (phenomenon where beams of light scatter off suspended particles) to achieve a shifting, ethereal luminescent profile. In ambient illumination, an almost imperceptible, light gray-to-faint-blue hue dances delicately across the frosted satin contours of the relief. When exposed to direct or backlighting, this cool surface tone transitions seamlessly into a breathtaking, warm, and muted amber, radiating from deep within the core of the glass.
A NOTE ON THE PHOTOGRAPHY
Capturing true pre-war opalescence on camera can be incredibly tricky. Because this piece reacts so dynamically to surrounding light, its appearance shifts completely depending on the angle of the shot. In some photos, the glass shows with pristine, cool clarity, while in others, the shifting light uncovers its deep, frosted amber glow. We have purposefully included a range of raw lighting angles. One image portrays the translucent by a hand placed in the background of the vase. Showcasing both sides of its holographic personality as transparently and authentically as possible.
