An exceptionally rare and highly artistic pendant light, handcrafted during the early years of the 20th century and most likely originating from a distinguished Viennese workshop. Pieces of this artistic quality and with this extraordinary combination of materials are virtually unknown on today’s international market. The spherical shade is meticulously composed of individually selected translucent alabaster fragments, each carefully arranged within a hand-crafted leaded framework. When illuminated, the alabaster emits a remarkably warm, atmospheric glow that beautifully reveals its natural veining and subtle variations in color. The true highlight of this exceptional work of art is the incorporation of finely executed porcelain lithophanes. These remarkable porcelain plaques reveal delicate three-dimensional scenes only when backlit, creating an enchanting visual effect that has fascinated collectors for well over a century. Each lithophane acts as a miniature illuminated artwork, transforming the lamp into an object of continual discovery. Small colored art glass inserts in brilliant shades of blue and green are thoughtfully distributed throughout the composition, adding jewel-like accents and further enhancing the richness of the design without distracting from the natural beauty of the alabaster. The shade is suspended from three hand-forged chains attached to a forged steel support and finished with an elegant brass ceiling canopy, perfectly complementing the handcrafted character of the piece. Beyond its function as a lighting fixture, this pendant should be regarded as a sculptural work of decorative art. Whether illuminated or not, it captivates with its craftsmanship, remarkable materials, and poetic interaction of light, stone, glass, and porcelain. The electrical wiring has been professionally renewed, allowing the lamp to be safely enjoyed while preserving its historic character. This is a museum-quality decorative object that would make a spectacular addition to a refined Art Nouveau, Vienna Secession, Arts & Crafts, or eclectic interior. Examples combining translucent alabaster, illuminated lithophanes, and colored art glass in such a harmonious composition are extraordinarily scarce and are seldom encountered on the international art market. ⸻ Dimensions * Height (overall): 31.5 in.
