At the end of the 19th century, while the Art Nouveau movement aimed to democratize aesthetically pleasing and functional housing, its creations remained primarily accessible to a bourgeois clientele. In Belgium, Gustave Serrurier-Bovy distinguished himself with a pioneering approach, developing modern furniture designed for the working classes thanks to the possibilities offered by mass production. At the 1905 Liège World's Fair, he presented sets with a clean design, characterized by rational construction, exposed plank joints, and great sturdiness. While the economic success of this approach remains uncertain, it illustrates a genuine desire to make design accessible to the masses. True to this philosophy, Serrurier-Bovy also furnished Villa L'Aube with this simple and functional furniture, particularly in the staff rooms, making his own interior a concrete example of his social and aesthetic convictions.
