A rare pair of French 1930 art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding beautiful slip shades. The panels in frosted molded-pressed glass are made by Lorrain verrerie de belle étoile. Several important Lorrain pieces in molded-pressed glass were signed d'Avesn. The shades represent a flock of birds (herons cranes storks?) in flight. The way the sky with clouds is done is a typical design known from d'Avesn in his designs for Lorrain. The mounts show the foundry marks CJ for Celestin Jamain. A Parisian producer of art déco lighting during the interbellum.
The sconces are 34,5 cm 13,58 inches wide. 18,5 cm 7,28" high. And 10 cm 3,94" deep. They are in good overall condition. I have re-nickeled the mounts and they come rewired with an American candelabra base socket each. For other countries I can place E14 ones. The shades have no cracks but shallow chips are present (see pictures of shade 1 and 2). The chips hardly show with the shades placed in the metal mounts. One of the two panels is signed P. d'Avesn France on the inside rim. The other shade apparently had a rough rim and has been grinded, so on that one the signature disappeared.

On Lorrain: In 1926 the famous Daum glass manufacturers opened a new plant in the village of Croismare near Luneville. A year later it started a production of pressed glassware. The new company 'Les Verreries d'Art Lorrain" merged with the one Daum already owned in this village "Les verreries de belle étoile". For these plants the Daum company employed the well-known designer Pierre d'Avesn , who till that time worked for René Lalique. d'Avesn stayed in office till the Lorrain branch closed down in 1934. Some prestigious Lorrain models were signed P.d'Avesn like the bowl of this lamp. After the bankruptcy of Lorrain d'Avesn became the director of the Hanots/Verlys glass manufactory of the Holophane company. See less
