Carved with precision and adorned with raffia, shells, and fabric, the Dogon Abstract Fetish Figure Knife reflects the Dogon people's unique worldview, often characterized by their spiritual beliefs and ancestral reverence.
Dogon history states that they migrated from the west bank of the Niger River in the 10th-13th centuries, settling in northern Burkina Faso and being known as kibsi. After dependence on the Mossi kingdom of Yatenga ended in 1490, the Dogon people fled to the Bandiagara Cliffs. Data collected from excavated remains in the region dates back to the 10th century, indicating prior inhabitants. Those who stayed in Yatenga were known as nyonyose, or the descendants of the original inhabitants.
