The male figure … Read more This finely carved Songye standing figure exemplifies the powerful sculptural language for which Songye art is renowned. The male figure is depicted with hands resting on a prominent, forward-projecting abdomen, emphasizing vitality, authority, and spiritual containment. The body is strongly articulated, with elongated proportions and a confident, upright stance carved from a single dense block of wood.
The head displays classic Songye formal characteristics, including a pronounced jutting chin, a sharply geometric nose, and deeply sculpted, projecting eyes that convey alertness and spiritual intensity. The cylindrical neck and angular facial planes reflect the distinctive cubist aesthetic associated with Songye master carvers. A fiber cord is wrapped around the waist, an element commonly associated with ritual activation and spiritual restraint.
Among the Songye and other Bantu-speaking peoples of the greater Congo region, figures such as this—known as Nkishi—play a central role in spiritual and social life. They are used by ritual specialists or diviners known as Nganga, who activate the sculpture through prayers, secret formulas, and ritual substances to address illness, misfortune, protection, divination, and communication with the spirit world. The Nkishi functions as a conduit between human and spiritual realms, embodying accumulated power through use.
The surface of the figure shows a rich, aged patina, bearing evidence of handling, ritual engagement, and time, all of which contribute to its authenticity and spiritual presence. This sculpture stands as a compelling example of Songye ritual art—both visually striking and deeply rooted in the lived spiritual practices of Central Africa.
 Arrested bug damage on the base can stand but not very well, and is skewed when standing.
