This finely carved Luba figural stool features two standing figures supporting the circular seat above, their hands resting firmly on their knees in a gesture of composure and authority. Sculpted in hardwood with a rich, deep patina, the stool embodies the refined aesthetics and spiritual philosophy of the Luba peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Among the Luba, stools were not ordinary utilitarian objects but powerful symbols of leadership and sacred kingship. Such seats were associated with chiefs and royalty, serving as embodiments of political authority and ancestral legitimacy. The female caryatid figures reflect the central role of women in Luba cosmology â particularly the concept of female spiritual power and the transmission of lineage through women.
The posture of the figures â upright, balanced, and self-contained â conveys dignity, restraint, and inner strength. Their hands placed on their knees emphasize stability and grounded authority, while the serene facial expressions suggest spiritual awareness. Scarification marks and carefully rendered coiffures, when present, further signify beauty, status, and cultural identity.
The sculptural quality of the carving â harmonious proportions, rounded volumes, and smooth surfaces developed through age and handling â gives the piece both visual presence and tactile warmth. As with many Luba works, the stool operates on both functional and symbolic levels: a seat of honor and a vessel of memory.
A compelling example of Luba court art, this figural stool stands as a testament to Central Africaâs masterful woodcarving traditions and the profound connection between art, leadership, and spiritual continuity.
