A striking example of Fang artistic expression, the mask is closely associated with the Ngil society, an influential group within Fang culture. Its form embodies elegant abstractions of the human face, with smooth, refined curves that highlight the orbital ridges and a long, tapered nose, culminating in a delicately carved mouth. This mask was integral to the rituals and social control activities of the Ngil society, where it functioned as a tool for identifying and confronting sorcerers. However, the French colonial authorities banned the use of these masks in 1910, in part due to their role in this ritualistic practice.
