This sculptural basket features a tightly coiled fiber body with a distinctive hourglass form, reinforced by bands of braided leather and stitched hide. The upper rim is bound with thicker material for durability, while the midsection is wrapped in a lattice of leather strips, adding both structure and visual texture.
Traditionally used for storing or transporting goods, vessels like this also reflect skilled craftsmanship and practical design suited to daily life. The natural patina, wear to the leather bindings, and slight irregularities in the weave indicate age and use.
A striking example of functional African basketry with strong presence and organic character.
Provenance: Matter CollectionFrom the collection of Margie and Phil Matter. Margie lived in South Africa, and later she and her husband Phil opened a gallery in Tucson. Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
