This handwoven basket from Botswana reflects a long-standing tradition of fiber artistry shared across southern Africa, where form and pattern come together in both functional and decorative objects. Similar in spirit to baskets made by the Zulu, Botswana weaving traditions have developed their own distinct identity, with a strong emphasis on geometric patterning and refined craftsmanship. Today, these baskets are appreciated not only for their utility but also as collectible works that embody cultural heritage and skilled artistry.
Measuring approximately 16 inches in diameter, this basket is intricately coiled using fibers from the Mokola palm, a material native to the Okavango region. The warm natural tones are accented by dark, rhythmic patterns that encircle the form, showcasing the weaverâs precision and design sensibility. Created entirely by hand, the process is time-intensive and requires careful preparation of natural materials, along with a deep understanding of traditional techniques passed down through generations. The result is a durable, sculptural piece that holds its shape while offering a striking visual presence.
