A Note for the Curators: This exceptional piece retains a complete "pedigree" of 1950s mid-century export provenance, including its original bilingual "Yu Ting Good Luck Chest" paper label, a rare crisp ink-stamped "Made in Hong Kong" mark, and original handwritten merchant grease-pencil markings on the base.
A beautiful and authentic slice of 1950s post-war history, this footed treasure chest is a stellar example of mid-century Hong Kong master craftsmanship. Hand-carved from premium solid camphor wood, the box retains its legendary, clean aromatic scent, which historically served as a natural deterrent to protect valuable textiles, jewelry, and heirlooms from pests.
The exterior showcases exceptional, deep high-relief artistry on five sides. The top lid features an intricate narrative scene of figures gathered near a classic architectural moon gate, while the front and sides depict timeless figures navigating willow and bamboo-lined provincial landscapes. The entire composition is framed by a heavily carved repeating floral border and stands dynamically on four stylized scroll feet.
The chest opens via its original, heavy circular brass medallion clasp to reveal a clean, pristine interior displaying the stunning, wide feathering of the natural camphor grain. Perfectly scaled for a vanity, dresser, or entry console, this tactile piece brings a beautiful layer of mid-century soul, history, and functional storage to any interior.
