Raymond's monumental publication *L'Art Islamique en Orient – IIe Partie*, depicting a series of medieval door knockers from Bursa (Broussa), reproduced at their original size. Issued as Plate 49, this fascinating composition illustrates nine distinct examples of Ottoman and late Seljuk architectural metalwork dating to the thirteenth century. The designs range from delicate floral rosettes and geometric stars to elaborate ceremonial fittings, each demonstrating the artistic refinement applied to even the most practical elements of domestic and religious architecture. The large example at the right side of the sheet features a monumental floral boss and elongated finial, while the smaller examples reveal an extraordinary variety of symbolic forms. Rosettes, stars, circles, and interlacing motifs reflect the broader visual language of Islamic ornament, where geometry and nature coexist in harmonious balance. Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, preserved many examples of medieval Anatolian craftsmanship. These door knockers represent a direct continuation of Seljuk decorative traditions, combining functionality with sophisticated artistic expression. Such objects served not merely as hardware but as markers of status, identity, and cultural continuity. Alexandre M. Raymond carefully documented these details during his architectural surveys throughout Turkey in the early twentieth century. His publications remain among the most important visual references for Ottoman architecture and decorative arts. The soft terracotta backgrounds and verdigris green metal surfaces create a striking and highly decorative composition that feels both medieval and remarkably modern. The balanced arrangement of forms gives the sheet exceptional visual appeal and makes it particularly suitable for collectors interested in Islamic design, architecture, or historic metalwork.
