Raymond's celebrated publication l'art islamique en orient – iie partie, documenting two masterpieces of early ottoman religious architecture in bursa (historically brousse), turkey. This finely rendered composition illustrates: • façade de yéchil djami à brousse (1420) – the celebrated green mosque of bursa • façade de la mosquée du sultan mourad ier à tchékirgué, brousse (1400) – the mosque of sultan murad i at çekirge executed in subtle blue-grey washes with delicate terracotta accents, the plate captures the monumental symmetry, elegant domes, soaring minarets, and refined architectural ornament that defined the formative centuries of ottoman design. The upper image depicts the monumental green mosque, one of the greatest achievements of early fifteenth-century ottoman architecture, distinguished by its balanced façade and richly ornamented portals. The lower composition presents the mosque of sultan murad i at çekirge, combining domes, arcades, and striped masonry in a composition that anticipates later imperial ottoman styles. Alexandre marcel raymond devoted decades to documenting the artistic heritage of anatolia and the ottoman world.
