The print depicts a tranquil pastoral scene with mares and their young gathered beneath a magnificent tree in an English countryside setting. The plate is signed in the image "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that Howitt both conceived and executed the engraving himself. At lower right it bears the publication line "Published Feb.y 1st, 1799," confirming its eighteenth-century origin. Samuel Howitt was among the foremost British animal and sporting artists of his generation.
