The juxtaposition of scientific curiosity and everyday life is characteristic of Romantic natural history illustration. Designed by Édouard Traviès and engraved by Beyer for publication by Furne in Paris circa 1840, the work reflects the golden age of illustrated zoological books. Fine original hand-coloring enhances the subtle details of both the marine creature and the surrounding figures. Presented and sold unframed. Framed images are for inspiration only. Condition: Minor age-related toning and light foxing, with small binding remnants along the upper edge as issued. Overall a very attractive impression with original hand-coloring. See less
