The composition exemplifies the refined equestrian imagery that made Howitt one of the foremost animal painters and engravers of the Georgian period. The plate bears the inscription "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that the artist both designed and engraved the work himself. At lower right the publication line reads "Published Oct. 23, 1799," confirming its original eighteenth-century publication. Samuel Howitt (1756–1822) was renowned for his depictions of horses, hunting scenes, dogs, and rural sporting life.
