A huntsman appears in the background beside a gate, reinforcing the sporting character of the composition. The plate bears the inscription "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that Samuel Howitt both designed and engraved the work himself. At lower right the print is dated "Published Aug. 3, 1799," confirming its eighteenth-century publication. Samuel Howitt ranks among the most important British animal and sporting artists of the Georgian period. Best known for his naturalistic representations of horses, hunting scenes, dogs, and wildlife, his works were widely admired by the English gentry and country estates. His engravings combine elegant composition with an extraordinary sensitivity to the anatomy and character of animals. This authentic late eighteenth-century engraving makes a superb addition to collections of sporting art, equestrian memorabilia, or traditional English country-house interiors.
