Signed and titled original work on paper is by Sacramento artist Maria Alquilar, also known as Barbara Taffet, founder of the Jennifer Pauls Gallery. The intimate 9" x9" artwork composition is titled “Bigs” and is inscribed at the lower margin. The artwork features Alquilar’s expressive style with luminous blue tones and organic figurative forms. Representing an early and personal example of her fine art practice, this piece reflects the work of an artist well known in Northern California for her vibrant imagery and later for her ceramic murals throughout Sacramento. The piece is housed in its original frame under glass with a neutral mat.
This work comes from the private collection of Eve Paige Spencer and Donner Spencer, a California couple whose creative output spanned enamel work, published writing, and a lifelong practice of collecting fine art. Alquilar's expressionist figure work reflects the collection's embrace of bold, emotionally direct art.
