Utilizing a Red Mouth Cameo Bull Shell as its canvas, the … Read more Exquisite Antique Italian Cameo Relief Hand-Carved Sea Conch Shell. Utilizing a Red Mouth Cameo Bull Shell as its canvas, the artisan has created a detailed relief hand-carving of a classical Greco-Roman scene with a woman and a Cupid surrounding an urn. The shell cameo was then mounted upright on a turned wooden base and thus transformed into a charming decorative lamp dating from the 1920s. When illuminated from within, the layered shell produces a warm glow, highlighting the delicately engraved details. The fashion for carved seashells exploded in Italy during the 19th Century. The shells were used as a medium to demonstrate the skill of the artisan and were collected and celebrated for the intricately executed, typically Classical, carved reliefs.
