The sitter is shown in formal dark dress with a high white collar and cravat, his head turned in three-quarter view and his gaze directed outward with a composed, penetrating expression. His dark curled hair, strong brow, rounded face, and sharply modeled features give the portrait a distinctive psychological presence, while the subdued green-gray background heightens the contrast between the pale face, white neckcloth, and dark coat.

Although the painting has the costume and format of the broader Anglo-American portrait tradition, I would lean American rather than English based on the small cabinet scale, direct frontal intensity, simplified treatment of the shoulders, and slightly provincial handling of the facial modeling.
