A finely carved marble figure of Mousse Siffleur, also known as The Whistling Boy or The Whistling Ship’s Boy, after Victor Szczeblewski (Polish, 1859-1901). The youthful figure is depicted standing barefoot in a relaxed yet animated pose, with both hands tucked into his pockets and his lips pursed as though whistling. Dressed in a loose sailor-style blouse, rolled trousers, and a rounded cap, the boy carries the charming immediacy of late 19th- and early 20th-century genre sculpture, in which everyday childhood subjects were elevated through refined modeling and expressive naturalism.
Carved from warm cream-colored marble with honey-toned veining, the sculpture displays careful attention to surface, posture, and costume. The softly modeled face, upturned gaze, puckered mouth, carved folds of the blouse, gathered trousers, bare feet, and integral naturalistic support all contribute to the work’s narrative character. The darker veining concentrated at the cap adds visual distinction, while the polished marble surface gives the figure a luminous, tactile quality.
