Fernand Carion & le verre Français
A wonderful Belgo-French art deco lamp made around 1925-1930. A wrought iron base by the Belgian blacksmith Fernand Carion holds a large acid-engraved shade by Schneider le verre Français. This model is called Figues (Figs) and was designed by Schneider between 1919 and 1922. See page 98 of the standard book on Schneider by Joulin and Maier. Fernand Guillaume Marie Carion (1884-?) was a famous blacksmith in Brussels during the interbellum. He lost his right hand in an accident in his forge after which he specialized in smaller items like wrought iron ornaments on Belgian stoneware vases lamps chandeliers book-ends etc. For his lighting fixtures Carion ordered glass shades by Schneider in France. (Many sellers talk about François Carion which is incorrect, his first name was Fernand).
The desk lamp on offer is 12,4 inches (31,5 cm) high and about 14,57" (37 cm) wide. The shade is 5,9 inches (15 cm) high and 5.3 inches (13,5 cm) in diameter. The lamp is in excellent condition. Two common tiny chips on the rim of the shade hidden by the fitter (see last two pictures). The shade is unsigned. The iron has a nice deep-brown almost black patina. And is signed F. Carion. At the back we can see the number 5736 stamped in the iron. These numbers on Carion made iron are no model numbers. The numbers refer to orders. The lamp is rewired with new cloth covered twisted cord. I placed an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug.
