19th C. American "Mule" Style Chest of Drawers
This beautiful and very clean piece is distinguished by one of the finest faux-finish artisan paint treatments we've ever seen.
Strong and bold hunter green, outlined in gilt gold, and wine or brick red, floating on top of a burl walnut paint scheme that is absolutely wonderful.
A very nice set of period drawer pulls in burnished brass are a perfect compliment, as are decorated stand "feet" and a top center key lock closure.
In the "mule" configuration, the two upper drawers are "false fronts", hiding a top-loading hinged cover double deep blanket sized chest. The two lower drawers are traditionally sized drawers.
Original hardware, two very strong original hinges on the top, and beautiful dovetail and peg construction throughout.
Incredibly useful size as well - 39" wide, 19" deep, 46" tall, and stands 10" off the ground on the two wall style feet.
Exceptionally clean as well - inside and out. Paint finish is bright and shows extremely well.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
My husband and I both audibly gasped when we saw this one. The paint work is fantastic, the size is almost perfect, and the added novelty and function of the mule design drawers and top make this a memorable chest.
Comes from a very fine Eastern Shore of Maryland estate which was filled with a number of outstanding paint finished American pieces.
We'd guess the cabinet here is 19th C. and the paint is likely 20th C - as it is so bright and clean. But the combination works beautifully, and it will be an exciting point of interest along side a great many design styles.
Farmhouse - yes. English or European Cottage - yes. Traditional American - yes. Even an urban setting - absolutely.
Be bold!
