This wonderful original etching with drypoint was realized by Marc Chagall in 1924. Hand-signed in pencil by the artist "Marc Chagall" at the lower right corner. It's an artist proof (at the lower left margin, in pencil, there is written "Essai"). It's a limited edition of 100 copies: there were 25 impressions on Japan laid paper a further 25 on Chine paper and 75 on Arches paper. It was printed by Louis Fort in 1924 and published by Editions Albert Morancé, Paris. The work is part of the illustrated book “ Le Portfeuille des Peintres-Graveurs Indépendants pour 1925 ” [The portfolio of painter-printmakers 1925] by Christian Zervos, Éditions Albert Morancé, Paris. There was also a later edition of 250 unsigned and unnumbered impressions. The etching is placed on a rigid sheet. Very good condition. Ref. Kornfeld 39. The etching represents a female backless on a bed; on the right side there is an opened fan and in lower left margin there is a pair of shoes. On the bed there are some flower silouhettes, maybe the decoration of the sheet. Marc Chagall (Vitebsk 1887) is one of the most interesting artists of XX Century, especially for the use of symbols in his artworks. The lithography is for Chagall one of the most suitable means to express its artistic language, which allows an extensive use of color and high runs. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
