Edmond Gauthier & Daum
An elegant 1925-1935 Art Deco lamp in wrought iron with a pâte de verre shade signed Daum Nancy France. The lamp was made by the Parisian ferronnier d’Art (blacksmith) Edmond Gauthier. The lamp is in excellent condition. Gauthier made three versions of these Japonese-style "pagoda" lamps of which this is the largest. It is shown in the old E. Gauthier sales catalog as night lamp #308. The lamp is 9,09 inches (23,1 cm) high and about 5,5" (14 cm) in diameter. The shade with a height of 4,9 inches (12 cm) only was specially made by Daum for this pagoda lamp. Standard Daum shades are about an inch larger. The lamp is rewired with cloth covered twisted cord and equipped with an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug.
Edmond Claude Sylvain Gauthier (Paris 1896 – St-Germain-en-Laye 1985) began his career as a locksmith before becoming a ferronnier d’Art specialized in lighting fixtures in the 1920s. His workshops were located at 180 rue Etienne Marcel in the Parisian suburb of Bagnolet. And he later moved to 13 rue de Nantes in the 19th of Paris. Gauthier mainly used Daum shades for his table lamps chandeliers and wall lights.
