Published in Dublin by J. Christie of 17 Ross Lane and engraved by Patrick Maguire, whose signature appears as "Maguire Sculp.", the print was issued as an illustration for The World Displayed, or, A Collection of Voyages and Travels, a widely read geographical and historical work of the period. The composition captures a dramatic moment of first contact. Captain Davis stands on the shoreline, gesturing toward a small group of indigenous people arriving by canoe. The artist presents the encounter as peaceful and curious, emphasizing the sense of exploration and discovery that characterized European accounts of the New World. Behind the figures rises a rugged coastal landscape, while the radiant sun overhead adds a symbolic sense of revelation and new horizons. Captain John Davis (c.1550–1605) was one of the most important English navigators of the Elizabethan era. Best known for his voyages in search of the Northwest Passage, he explored the Arctic regions of Greenland, Baffin Island, and the waters that now bear his name, the Davis Strait. His expeditions contributed significantly to European knowledge of North American geography and laid foundations for later exploration of the Canadian Arctic. As with many illustrations published in the early nineteenth century, the engraving reflects contemporary European interpretations of exploration history rather than an eyewitness record. Today it serves as a fascinating document of how the Age of Discovery was remembered and illustrated for readers more than two centuries after the events themselves. The print appeals to collectors of exploration history, Arctic voyages, North American history, indigenous studies, Irish printing, and early nineteenth-century book illustrations.
