A wonderfully characterful english arts & crafts solid oak bookcase dating from around 1910, featuring the charming carved motto “judge not a book by the cover” across the upper frieze.
beautifully constructed from solid oak, the bookcase displays many of the hallmarks of the arts & crafts movement, including clean architectural lines, hand-finished timber, decorative cut-out detailing and elegant gothic-inspired arches to the central display section. The rich quarter-sawn oak grain and deep honey-brown patina have matured beautifully over the last century, giving the piece exceptional warmth and character.
the layout combines practicality with decorative appeal. Two generous outer sections feature adjustable shelves supported by original brass shelf rests, while the central open display incorporates arched divisions and smaller compartments ideal for displaying pottery, sculpture, treasured books or collectibles. A shaped lower apron with subtle heart-shaped piercings sits above a useful full-width open shelf.
the motto, “judge not a book by the cover,” makes this an especially unusual and desirable example, likely commissioned for a private library, reading room, school or educational institution. Pieces carrying original carved inscriptions are increasingly difficult to find and make excellent statement furniture in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
an exceptional decorative and functional bookcase that would work equally well in a library, study, living room, home office or retail setting.
