The front depicts … Read more A rich and dramatic Chinese Export folding six-panel double-sided coromandel screen executed in radiant gilt and lacquer. The front depicts a beautiful composition of twisting brown vines and leaves with clusters of red-to-purple grapes, interspersed with large white floral blossoms, slender bamboo shoots, blade-like grass, and several birds perched and in flight. The lacquered panels are incised and intricately decorated with natural color pigments. The hand-painted composition is imposed onto a brilliant gold leaf ground with a beautifully aged, variegated surface containing a warm reflective quality and tonal changes from hand-crafted construction and age. A fine lacquer and gilt border lines the screen. The reverse side is lacquered in deep black and decorated more sparsely in a classical hand-painted stye, depicting a weathered scholar's rock, tall bamboo stalks, low grasses, small flowers, and a pair of birds. The screen stands on rectangular legs fitted with patinated brass foot caps. The screen works beautifully as a room divider, art display, statement accent piece, or to anchor a room with warm color.
