Known as shizi or shishi, the mythical beast is a benevolent and playful guardian of the home.

Cloaked in a monochrome glaze of emerald green color, this fu lion protector from the late 19th century recalls the fearsome guardians of Tang-dynasty (618-906 AD) statuary. Originally part of an elaborate roof design, the creature is at attention in a seated posture, sculpted with strong arms, pointy ears and gaping jaws filled with sharp teeth. A swirling mane cascades down its back and its eyes have been left unglazed for an arresting stare.
