Crafted with fine detail and perfection of form, these antique Chinese collector's shelves are a statement addition to any interior. Dated to the late 19th century, the pair would have stood in the cultivated studio of a Qing-dynasty scholar-official, proudly displaying stacks of books, scholars' rocks, precious antiques, and other scholarly implements.
The shelves are beautifully constructed with seamless mortise-and-tenon joinery, designed with tapered sides, clean-lined corners and three open shelves. Shallow frames enclose each shelf with graceful curvature and a beaded trim, forming cartouche shapes that perfectly outline the objects on display. The striking silhouettes are enhanced by a finish of dark black lacquer, now richly aged and lightly faded along the edges.
