Sold as a set of 8, these solid mahogany Georgian style chairs are from the Baker Furniture Historic Charleston Collection, an exclusive line of luxury antique reproductions and adaptations. Launched in 1976 under license from the Historic Charleston Foundation, this acclaimed collection recreates classic 18th- and early 19th-century Georgian, Federal, Chippendale, and Regency design. The line was phased out gradually in the late 1990s and Charleston Collection pieces are now highly sought after.
The style of these chairs is Georgian Rococo that cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale popularized in the mid-eighteenth century. They are all quality built using the finest mahogany timbers and include ‘H’ stretchers that provide added stability. Height of back, floor to top rail 37 ½“; Height of seat from floor 19”; Width of seat at back 18”; Width of seat at front 23”.
The chair backs are a dynamic blend of curvaceous elements and carvings. The stiles connect to the top rail using a delicately carved acanthus leaf to create a seamless curve that adds depth and texture to the structural elements of the chair. The splat is styled as interweaving ribbons that also use carved acanthus leaves to emphasize the flowing lines of this chair. The back legs are splayed, and the front legs are squared with brackets carved in the acanthus leaf motif. The seat is an unusually comfortably padded tight seat with an apron rather than the flat, lightly padded drop-in seat used for other Chippendale reproductions. The apron is decorated by scallops of close-nailed brass upholstery tacks. The concave curve of the seat combined with the padded apron make this a very comfortable chair that doesn’t pinch the circulation of the back of the legs like most dining chairs do.
This is an excellent opportunity to own premium Baker Furniture pieces that bring history, quality, and elegance to any home.
