Martin Freyer "Op Art" Bisque Porcelain Floor Vase, Model 2933, for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany, 1992
An impressive sculptural floor vase designed by Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Line, model 2933, produced in Germany in 1992. Standing 43 cm high, this striking piece exemplifies Freyer's exploration of rhythm, relief, and optical perception, transforming porcelain into an object that is as much sculpture as functional vessel.
The elongated rectangular form is animated by finely textured vertical reliefs interrupted by two deeply recessed circular elements. This interplay between linear repetition and rounded forms creates a dynamic composition that shifts with changing light, producing subtle shadows and optical movement across the matte white surface. The result is a work that balances geometric precision with an almost geological sense of erosion and texture.
Executed in unglazed bisque porcelain, the vase possesses a soft, stone-like appearance that emphasises its sculptural qualities. The absence of glaze allows the relief to become the primary visual language, recalling architectural concrete, carved limestone, and modernist relief sculpture.
