This beautiful vintage tray is a Japanese toleware serving tray featuring a decoupage-style reproduction of The Annunciation, depicting the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary in a Renaissance-inspired religious scene.
The tray has an elegant scalloped form with gracefully shaped handles and a richly antiqued gilt finish. Delicate hand-painted floral and scroll embellishments adorn the border, while the central image has a softly aged, fresco-like appearance that evokes the look of medieval and early Renaissance artwork.
The underside mark indicates it was made in Japan by Patent No. 10422, likely dating to the mid-20th century, when decorative Florentine and Italian-inspired trays were highly fashionable.
