Amazing and Rare Master Piece Foot of Mercury in Greek Thassos marble, 18th century Magnificent, large-scale work. 120 x 50 x H 70 cm
Good condition The "foot of Mercury" refers to the legendary winged sandals (talars) of the Roman god Mercury (corresponding to the Greek Hermes), a universal symbol of speed, divine message, and travel. In classical and modern art, the feet of the messenger of the gods are the primary attribute that allowed him to fly. The most famous work that immortalizes this detail is Giambologna's Flying Mercury (1580), in which the god rests a single foot on a gust of wind.
